FreePlay

image of dancer

FreePlay will be an interactive audio-visual performance experience where sound and visual output are uniquely generated through physical movement. Through the use of Maria Coleman's Œ'Body Response System'(BRS) the movements of dancer Niamh Condron will initiate sound material for the musician, Seán Óg to respond to, flipping the conventional Œdancer responds to the music set-up on its head, and allowing expressive movements to have a leading compositional role. The BRS also allows audience members to have an input, with floor mats giving them an input on proceedings. This piece will be improvised and this open process of artistic collaboration will allow all parties to contribute meaningfully and respond to each other as the work unfolds. The BRS is designed to function as a Œmedia playground that offers an opportunity to loose oneself and experiment in a playful way that opens possibilities for expressive communication, creativity and fun. Its design is being refined through a series of user workshops and performances that Œplaytest how effective the interface is and how engaging the resulting experience is. The informal nature of these playtests is aimed at playfully dismantling borders between performers and spectators, and encouraging the audience to actively contribute towards the unfolding piece. A further performance of 'FreePlay' is planned for the Crypt in Christchurch in November. http://vimeo.com/mariacoleman http://www.sean-og.com http://www.thistorsion.com
